Breakfast is available seven days a week from 8 a.m. An authentic German beer garden in the heart of Atlanta, providing an extensive selection of beers and traditional German fare. On the menu you’ll find unique dishes like eggs and brats, German eggs benedict, pork shank with over easy eggs, and the Bromosa. “We’ve recreated that electric atmosphere here at Checkers, with items from a familiar menu, cooked and served by familiar faces.” “The Cypress Nook had such a loyal customer base,” said Moore. Soon after, all of Cypress Nook’s chefs and servers had a new home working at Checkers. Tilus brought onboard his mentor and former co-worker, Chef Levoy Jean. The timing was perfect since Moore recently completed a dining room expansion and opened a tented outdoor biergarten. Moore brought on Chef Theo Tilus, who quickly realized the potential if Checkers opened for breakfast. When Ilse Wettengel closed the Cypress Nook in 2021 and sold the property to the city, she approached Moore to take on her staff. Moore took over in 2008 and it has become one of the best known German restaurants in South Florida. In 1983, Detlef achieved his dream and opened Checkers Old Munchen, 2209 E. Locals soon fell in love with Detlef’s authentic German dishes, like his chicken paprika, sauerbraten, goulash, and wurstnlatte. He found Cypress Nook, a highly popular German breakfast spot on McNab Road, and approached owners Peter and Ilse Wettengel for a job. After migrating to Florida in the late 70s, Detlef searched for a place to cook the schweinhaxen (marinated and slow-roasted pork shank) and jaeger schnitzel his country was known for, and which had been part of his family’s heritage throughout generations past. It began with chef Detlef Newman cooking his way through the busy restaurant scene in his hometown in Germany, all while he dreamed of having his own German eatery in the United States. “Life always finds its way back to the beginning and I’m proud of our history.” “It’s a success story about separate restaurants with their own shared past, merging together again,” said Moore. Locals know Checkers to be a dinner spot, but owner Mathew Moore tells a tale of how the past of two restaurants (Checkers and Cypress Nook) circled back to the present.
